One of New Zealand’s leading baritone soloists, David Griffiths performs songs by Bellini, Brahms, Faure, Schubert, Vaughan Williams and Douglas Lilburn. Accompanied by his wife, well-known pianist Christine Griffiths.

David Griffiths is a New Zealander, born and brought up in Auckland. He gained his Master of Music in 1972 and proceeded to England to further his studies. Whilst in the United Kingdom David performed with many choral societies as soloist, the BBC Singers and in recital.

On his return to New Zealand he won the Mobil Song Quest, toured the USA and then became lecturer at Otago University for seven years. Returning to Auckland in 1993 David began a strong association with Opera New Zealand and performed several roles during the next few years. In 2000 David accepted a position at the University of Waikato where he was Senior Lecturer until his retirement in 2016. He wrote five Operas during his tenure, all performed by students in the voice department of the University.

David has maintained a reputation not only as one of New Zealand’s leading baritone soloists but also as a composer of considerable merit. His works have been performed and recorded throughout the world both by New Zealand and international choirs, soloists and ensembles and he continues to write in his new home in the beauty of Raglan.

Christine Griffiths is well-known throughout New Zealand as a piano accompanist and teacher of piano.  She studied performance piano at Auckland University with Janetta Mcstay and Bryan Sayer, graduating in 1974.

Christine and David have performed in recital extensively throughout New Zealand as well as abroad.  International concerts have included recital tours of America, Taiwan, China and Italy.

Christine is a regular performer at the Academy of Performing Arts Lunchtime recitals at Waikato University and is also a National recording artist for Radio NZ Concert FM.   In 2009 Christine and David released a CD recording on the Atoll label of David’s compositions entitled ’Charms and Knots’.

Christine has a very busy teaching studio in Hamilton and now in Raglan and is in demand at music workshops throughout NZ.
