  • -- November 2, 2024, 5:00 pm: Movie- THELMA (5.00pm)

    Revenge has never been sweeter.

James Croot STUFF/ WAIKATO TIMES 4.5/5 “One of 2024’s most crowd-pleasing and uplifting cinematic experiences

When 93-year-old Thelma Post (Oscar nominee June Squibb) gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she sets out on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her. A story exploring aging, family, and autonomy (and uniquely inspired by action movies like “Mission: Impossible”) – the film is based on a real-life experience of writer/director Josh Margolin’s grandmother, and marks Squibb’s first leading film role of her 70+ year career. This action comedy also stars Parker Posey, Richard Roundtree, Clark Gregg, Malcolm McDowell, and Fred Hechinger.

PRODUCERS: Nicholas Weinstock, Chris Kaye, Karl Spoerri, Benjamin Simpson, Zoë Worth
    DIRECTOR: Josh Margolin
WITH: June Squibb, Clark Gregg, Parker Posey, Richard Roundtree, Fred Hechinger

  • -- November 2, 2024, 7:30 pm: Movie- Ka Whawhai Tonu - Struggle Without End (7.30pm)

There is a lot of story to tell, in the events that led to the fall of Ōrākau, and Ka Whawhai Tonu covers a lot of ground, but still finds time for some of the more bonkers true-to-life details that transpired.

Graeme Tuckett STUFF/ WAIKATO TIMES 4/5 “Ka Whawhai Tonu – Struggle Without End: A welcome depiction of some indelible New Zealand history

Set in New Zealand (Aotearoa in Māori) in 1864, Ka Whawhai Tonu tells the story of a pivotal battle in the country’s first land wars, a battle fought with impossible odds between Māori and the colonial forces. This heroic conflict is told through the eyes of two young teenagers forced to take control of their own destiny amidst the chaos of the battle and their escape.

  • -- November 3, 2024, 7:00 pm: Movie- THE ROAD TO PATAGONIA (7.00pm)
    Eighth Screening by request.

Seventh screening was full house once more.

The lives of two strangers are changed forever when they cross paths on the surfing adventure of a lifetime, discovering love, downshifting and four Chilean horses.

Winner Byron Bay International Film Festival: Best Documentary

Graeme Tuckett STUFF/ THE POST 4/5 “The Road to Patagonia is an astonishing film to look at. Matty has a great eye for a frame and he sets up his cameras to drink in some glorious slices of nature. And his own and Heather’s narration – some of it recorded on the road – is economical, quite unflinching and heartfelt.”

The Road to Patagonia is a stunning, intimate and unflinching series of love letters within a documentary – firstly a love between two people, and secondly between humanity and the Earth. We follow Matty Hannon on an incredible solo adventure, to surf the west coast of the Americas by motorbike, from the top of Alaska to the tip of Patagonia.

But deep in the wilderness - alone with the wolves and the bears – Matty’s plans unexpectedly fall to pieces. After losing everything, and on the cusp of quitting he meets the girl of his dreams, a permaculture farmer named Heather Hillier who throws caution to the wind and sells her urban-farm to buy a bike of her own. Together riding south, the duo meet with Zapatista rebels, Amazonian shamans and Mapuche leaders whose salient words crack the adventurers’ cultural veneer.

The theme of deep ecology underpins the entire film, visually communicated through exquisite cinematography and emotional verité sequences. Shot over 16 years, the result is an adventurous exposé on the more-than-human world, offering a physical and spiritual odyssey to better understand our place in Nature.

    DIRECTOR: Matty Hannon
    WITH: Matty Hannon, Heather Hillier

  • -- November 16, 2024, 7:30 pm: Movie- IT ENDS WITH US (7.30pm)

We break the pattern or the pattern breaks us.

James Croot STUFF/ WAIKATO TIMES 3.5/5 “It Ends with Us is, despite some obvious tonal issues and narrative flaws, easily one of the better, emotionally satisfying contemporary romantic-drama to come out of Hollywood in recent years.

IT ENDS WITH US, the first Colleen Hoover novel adapted for the big screen, tells the compelling story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents relationship. When Lilys first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), suddenly reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle is upended, and Lily realizes she must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future. Directed by Justin Baldoni and produced by Alex Saks, Jamey Heath, and Christy Hall. The film stars Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, Amy Morton and Brandon Sklenar, from a screenplay by Christy Hall, based on the book by Colleen Hoover.

  • -- November 30, 2024, 7:30 pm: Movie- YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY (7.30pm)

A ravishing account of the birth of Australian surf culture, and the accompanying indie film movement.

Sydney Film Festival Review “ The film begins with a brief present-day sequence, of someone viewing and splicing a reel of film, before we are plunged into archival footage, taken from the films of the 1960s-1980s. This footage is beautiful — 16mm shots of surfers in remote beaches, of the sun rising and setting, and imagery of the water on its own. It’s good that the visuals are gorgeous, because this, largely, is all we see for 81 minutes. If you have no interest in videos of surfers, this is not the movie for you. As we watch these images, we hear the voices of various people who were a part of surf culture, of the films we are watching. They are kept offscreen until the end, which is an effective ploy."

YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY combines hundreds of hours of lovingly restored 16mm surfing footage with a salt-infused soundscape by Headland. This cinematic poem tells the story of a wild Aussie community who took off up the coast and discovered a whole new way to live. Going back to the never-before-seen camera reels to ask the question - what do we keep and what do we leave behind?

Featuring Tim Winton, Wayne Lynch, Bob McTavish, Albe Falzon, Evelyn Rich, Maurice Cole and many more. Inspired by Moonage Daydream and Jen Peedom's Mountain.

PRODUCERS: Alex Saks, Christy Hall, Jamey Heath
    DIRECTOR: Justin Baldoni
WITH: Jenny Slate, Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Brandon Sklenar, Hasan Minhaj, Amy Morton
