Movie- THE MOON IS UPSIDE DOWN (7.30pm)

7:30 pm – 9:15 pm
June 1, 2024

Loren Taylor’s darkly comic debut feature THE MOON IS UPSIDE DOWN was awarded Best First Feature at the closing ceremony of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival this weekend after sell-out screenings at the highly regarded A-List festival in Estonia.

STUFF/ WAIKATO TIMES Graeme Tuckett 4/5 stars "This is a literate, clever and blackly funny gem. It won't be for everyone, but I think if you like The Moon is Upside Down at all, you'll probably love it. Bravo."

In this New Zealand black comedy, three women - a duped mail-order bride, a numbed anaesthetist determined to have a romantic weekend, and an empty nester on an unexpected mission of mercy - each navigates her way through an unfamiliar landscape and the contours of the human heart.

Movie- WICKED LITTLE LETTERS (4.30pm)

4:30 pm – 6:15 pm
June 2, 2024

Be Careful What You Post

James Croot Stuff 4.5/5 "A sometimes manic mystery, a compelling character study and a crowd-pleasing courtroom drama all rolled into one, Little Letters is truly wicked fun."

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women - led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) - begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

PRODUCER: Graham Broadbent
DIRECTOR: Thea Sharrock
WITH: Olivia Colman, Timothy Spall, Eileen Atkins, Gemma Jones, Anjana Vasan, Jessie Buckley, Joanna Scanlan, Malachi Kirby, Lolly Adefope

This is a handbuilding class, however the techniques presented can also be used to create blocks for wheelwork. No experience necessary, suitable for beginning or intermediate clay artists.

Membership if applicable, clay and bisque firing included, glaze firing charged separately.

Karioi Quilts & Crafts

10:30 am – 1:00 pm
June 13, 2024

Karioi Quilts & Crafts - second Thursday of every month.

The Karioi Quilters have been making high quality, natural fibre, artistic quilts for many years. Primarily a patchwork and quilting group, the members meet to share knowledge and skills and enjoy creating in good company.

From 2023, we changed the name to Karioi Quilts and Crafts to open the group up to other crafters.

Members can work on their own projects ranging from quilts, sewing projects and you can even bring your knitting, as long as it’s not a messy craft anything goes.  New members are always welcome to come along to work on their own projects and learn techniques from a group of very creative craftspeople.

Group co-ordinator is Sue Webber 021 489944

Meetings are held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from 10am to 1pm (sometimes 3pm if the room is available) on the second Thursday of every month. 10 sessions per year from February to December. Subscription is $30 per year which goes towards room hire.

Movie- THE MOON IS UPSIDE DOWN (5.00pm)

5:00 pm – 6:45 pm
June 15, 2024

DIRECTED by Loren Taylor
CAST Jemaine Clement, Robbie Magasiva, Rachel House, Elizabeth Hawthorne, Loren Taylor, Robyn Malcolm, Victoria Haralabidou

FIRST HE CHANGED MUSIC. THEN HE CHANGED THE WORLD.

Graeme Tuckett Waikato Times/ Stuff 4/5 Stars "A mostly very watchable and enjoyable ride. There's a good handful of set-pieces here – the jam session that led to the writing of the title track of Exodus is a standout, a visit to a pub in London where The Clash are playing is another."

Kingsley Ben-Adir as the legendary musician and Lashana Lynch as his wife Rita.

Movie- THE GREAT ESCAPER (4.30pm)

4:30 pm – 6:15 pm
June 16, 2024

Inspired by a True Love Story. Bernard Jordan escapes from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in France.

STUFF/ WAIKATO TIMES Graeme Tuckett 4/5 stars "The Great Escaper is a solid piece of work. Whenever the film leans into flag-waving or mawkishness, Parker and his team are quick to pull it back with a sharp cut, or one of Jackson's withering asides."

The great Michael Caine stars in this British feature inspired by the true story of Bernard Jordan who, in 2014, escaped from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in France.

Matariki festival of films Movie- Ngākau

5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
June 29, 2024

A selection of short films from local film maker Komako Silver

Ngākau 6.54mins 'NGĀKAU' is a poetic film that dives deep into the wananga of the 3 chambers of the heart — whatumanawa, manawa and pumanawa. Performance poet Michael Moore and filmmaker and taonga pūoro artist Komako-aroha Silver take us on a haerenga into the caves of one’s kare-a-roto with visual poetry from Te kore, Te Po through to Te Ao Marama. This rich immersion in tikanga, ancestry, the divine and the sublime is beautifully shot in the wilds of Te Henga, with an immersive soundtrack including taonga pūoro. Moore and Silver’s story embraces the heart, the mind and the soul.

Plus additional four short films 5min poetic films featuring different stars of Matariki narrated by Ngaronoa Renata in collaboration Tuakana Whetu Silver and Atirau Jensen.

Komako-aroha Silver will be present during the screenings of her films and will share personal insights into the making of these works with an invitation to ask questions after each section of the screening.

Online booking now closed - tickets available on the door, doors open 30 mins prior
