Jan 28: Have fun with clay at the Best West Clay Fest

by Sarah Bing, ceramic sculptor

At Old School Arts Centre, 5 Stewart St, Raglan
Saturday 28 January 10am-3pm | Free entry

100% local festival with something for everyone

A celebration of the ceramic arts, inviting the community of Whāingaroa to share our passion!

To acknowledge this and the fabulous work coming out of the Raglan Clay Shed (not to mention all the goodness from our established local potters and clay artists, and those in the wider Waikato region too) we’re hosting the first ever Best West Clay Fest!

Held at the Old School, this family fun day is all about celebrating local talent, sharing what is so good about clay with newbies and having some creative fun with the community.

Running all day, we’ve got a lineup of local superstars selling their work in the ceramics market (upstairs in the Theatre Workshop | Whare Tapere), featuring Alice Edginton, Aysh Geros, Hannah Fasenkloet, Bay Belle, Merren Goodison, Mr Potter and Bing Ceramics.

There will be a free community art project with a big pile of clay for everyone to get stuck in – making a village out of local mud.

Check out the display of the process clay goes through to become the finished bowl you eat your brekkie in. For some muddy inspiration visit the pottery wheel and handbuilding demonstrations.

Enter the Claylympics, which is open to anyone to compete in events like pull the longest handle, throw the tallest cylinder,
throw the most of your chosen shape off the hump. Win yourself a prized handmade ceramic trophy!

A collaborative ephemeral art project will provide an opportunity for everyone to get involved.

And of course, there will be food, fresh juices and tunes all nestled in the grass out the back of the Raglan Kindergarten.
