NZ HERALD 4 Stars: “This is a film about Kiwis being Kiwis, delivered through the portrayal of a club in disarray and all the wonderful human-ness and drama it brings with it.”

Tip: Pen your birds a little early when at a show to help them settle so they're not ruffled by the time the Judges come around!

Join members of the 148-year-old Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon Club in the lead up to the NZ National Poultry Show, as they battle history (and each other) in their quest for glory. Audiences will be introduced to an endearing and eclectic group of ‘chick fanciers’, each hoping to take away the top prize, including Doug the determined Club President, Rhys the young upstart, Sarah the chicken whisperer, Ian the exacting judge, Mark the voice of reason and Brian the lovable champion. ‘Pecking Order’ is a hilarious, unique, and heart-warming slice of Kiwiana which is sure to delight and surprise audiences of all ages.

-Screen Daily: “Spending time with these characters is highly enjoyable. To the director and his team’s enduring credit, the gentle fun here never comes at the cost of any participant’s dignity. While competitive chicken showing in New Zealand may seem pretty niche, the story of human obsession is universal and, in Martinov’s hands, very accessible.”

World premiere: Hot Docs Film Festival Toronto, Canada April 29 to May 6.

New Zealand premiere: Hoyts Riccarton May 9.

Raglan premiere: Movies at the Old School May 20.

PG 88 mins. | Documentary | New Zealand
